Ngee Ann Polytechnic's origins date back to 1963, when it was initially founded as Ngee Ann College. The founding was inspired by Ngee Ann Kongsi's vision to create a quality educational institution that would reconnect the Chinese-speaking community with its colonial-era cultural heritage. Over time, the college transformed into a full-fledged polytechnic and became a public institution governed by an independent council.
Sixty years later, Ngee Ann Polytechnic has become a major center of higher education. Success is based on innovative and comprehensive learning methods, strategic partnerships and enriching international experiences that prepare students for work around the world.

University Admissions & selection procedure

Admission Requirements

Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) enforces various entry prerequisites that all applicants must satisfy to be considered for admission. While some entry requirements are applicable to all courses, others are program-specific. The general admission criteria for undergraduate applicants include:

• An equivalent of a secondary school leaving certificate or high school diploma (International students should note that specific requirements vary by country).
• A minimum level of English language proficiency, typically demonstrated through an approved English language proficiency test, with a specified score.
• Sufficient financial capability to cover tuition fees.
• Submission of all pertinent supporting documents with the admission application, such as transcripts and a copy of the passport.
• These requirements apply to postgraduate applicants as well, with the distinction being that they should possess previous relevant university qualifications, at least equivalent to a bachelor's degree. The minimum grade requirements and specific subject prerequisites may vary depending on the chosen course and the level of study. Students are encouraged to refer to the NP website for a comprehensive list of entry requirements related to their selected program.
• For example, an undergraduate applicant from the United States seeking admission to NP should hold a Year 12 High School Diploma with a minimum grade of B in English and mathematics. Additionally, they should attain a minimum grade of B in their two best subjects (excluding English and mathematics) and one relevant subject, totaling a minimum of five B grades.

English Proficiency Requirement

• Proficiency in the English language is a crucial requirement for pursuing studies at NP, especially for international students whose native language is not English. While there are some exceptions, in the majority of cases, non-native English speakers are expected to demonstrate their English language proficiency through a standardized test.
• NP acknowledges a variety of language proficiency assessments, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Each of these testing methods has its own specified minimum English score prerequisite for admission consideration.
• The typical overall IELTS band score requested from applicants is 6, while the general overall TOEFL score (for the online TOEFL) is 78. However, some specific courses may require higher scores, so applicants are advised to conduct thorough research to ensure they meet the university and program-specific standards before submitting their applications.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) is deeply committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of their background or current financial circumstances, has access to quality education. Furthermore, NP believes in recognizing and rewarding the dedication and outstanding efforts of its students.

In alignment with this mission, NP offers a comprehensive range of scholarships, awards, grants, and bursaries, catering to both domestic and international students, to alleviate the financial constraints associated with pursuing education, especially abroad. NP is dedicated to providing support wherever possible, acknowledging that education can present financial challenges.

Among the scholarships, Donor Scholarships stand out, as they are bestowed upon students who demonstrate a genuine passion for their chosen field and actively engage in various aspects of their academic journey. The precise award amounts for Donor Scholarships may vary depending on the program and year. Students who meet the criteria will receive invitations to apply, streamlining the application process.

Another significant scholarship is the Polytechnic Foundation Programme Study Award, which is available to students enrolled in foundation programs. To qualify for this award, students must have achieved exceptional academic results, demonstrated leadership qualities, and embodied the values championed by NP. As with Donor Scholarships, the award amount may vary, and eligible students will be contacted and invited to submit their applications.

However, scholarships and awards are just one dimension of the financial support provided at NP. Students facing financial need or unforeseen financial hardship can also apply for a bursary, significantly reducing tuition costs.

For international students with a per capita income (PCI) below SGD 500, or domestic students with a PCI less than SGD 800, there's an opportunity to receive a donor bursary valued at approximately SGD 1,500 to SGD 1,800. To access this support, current NP students can submit their applications through the NPAL Student Portal. NP is unwavering in its commitment to making education accessible, ensuring that no deserving student is deterred by financial barriers.
