Overview about Pázmány Péter Catholic University
The Pázmány Péter Catholic University, one of the direct successors to the institution established by Cardinal Péter Pázmány, Archbishop of Esztergom and Primate of Hungary, in Nagyszombat on May 12, 1635, has, over the past two decades, firmly established itself as a prominent institution within the Hungarian higher education system. It has also earned recognition as a valued partner to numerous universities and research centers, both nationally and internationally. Furthermore, the university has become an active member of several prestigious research university networks. This concerted effort in organizing and advancing our university's role was officially acknowledged by the state in 2013 when we were honored with the title of National Excellence.
Our university's rich history dates back to its founding in 1635, and it has continued to operate without interruption ever since. Amid the challenging years of Ottoman occupation, which marked a tragic period in Hungary's history, Archbishop Péter Pázmány established this university. Its emergence would prove to be of profound importance in the development of education and religious culture in Hungary. Archbishop Pázmány firmly believed that a university was essential in safeguarding the nation's moral and intellectual heritage. In honor of his vision and legacy, the university adopted both his intellectual legacy and his name.
The university's physical location shifted from Nagyszombat (now Trnava) to Buda under the auspices of Maria Theresa. In addition to preserving its historical significance, the Pázmány Péter Catholic University holds unique objectives. It is a scholarly community dedicated to upholding and nurturing human dignity and cultural heritage through rigorous and critical research, education, and various contributions to both the national and international community. This commitment is particularly evident in the fields of theology and the humanities, while endeavors in the natural sciences are also actively pursued.
Simultaneously, the university bears the responsibility of maintaining the presence of the Catholic Faith within Hungarian culture and aspires to be a defining influence in the broader Catholic cultural sphere.
