In 1930, the republic government decided to establish Samarkand State Medical University. The University has come a long way to become one of the top medical higher education institutions in Uzbekistan and across Central Asia.
On May 7, 1930, the Council of People's Commissars of Uzbekistan passed Resolution No.80, which established the State Uzbek Medical Institute in Samarkand. This was an excellent occasion for the Central Asian population, as the region lacked an independent medical higher education institution.
Samarkand State Medical Institute (from April 2022 - University) underwent special development following the republic's independence. The government established a "National Programme of Training" in 1997, followed by a State Programme of Health Care Reform in 1998, resulting in the formation of a Faculty of Higher Nursing in 1999. In 2001, the Faculty of Medical Pedagogy was established, followed by the Faculty of Stomatology, Medical Preventive Medicine, Medical Biology, and Pharmacy in 2005, and students were enrolled in a new course named "Traditional Medicine" in subsequent years.
