Let's take a journey back to 1922, when UPSI was born as the Sultan Idris Training College (SITC). This brilliant concept was conceived by R.O. Winstedt, the deputy director of Malay schools, who recognized the need for a specialized training college for Malay teachers.
In honor of the late Sultan Idris Murshidul Azam Shah, the 28th Sultan of Perak, the college officially commenced its operations on 29 November 1922. The prestigious opening ceremony was graced by Sir George Maxwell, the chief secretary of the Federated Malay States.

UPSI's two campuses, the Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Campus (KSAJS) and the Sultan Azlan Shah Campus (KSAS), are strategically located to provide convenience to its students. KSAJS, the main campus, sits on a 300-acre site in Tanjung Malim, which spans across the Perak and Selangor state border. Meanwhile, KSAS is situated in the new township of Proton City, just 5 kilometres away from the current campus, on an 800-acre (3.2 km2) site.
Back in 1913, the pioneering teacher training center in Malaya was established in Taiping, known as the Matang Teacher Training College. It was a significant milestone in education as it aimed to shape the future educators of the nation. Interestingly, the college was initially housed in the residence of Ngah Ibrahim, a respected Malay noble from Taiping. However, after nine years, the college was relocated to Tanjung Malim and renamed after the reigning Sultan of Perak at that time, marking a new chapter in its history.
Sultan Idris Education University has a rich history that dates back to 1976 when it became co-educational with the admission of 150 female students. Eleven years later, in 1987, the institution was upgraded and renamed Institut Perguruan Sultan Idris. This upgrade brought new courses that led to a degree conferred by Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, which is now known as Universiti Putra Malaysia. Finally, in 1997, IPSI was upgraded once again and renamed Sultan Idris Education University, the prestigious institution we know today.
