Established in 1971 through the amalgamation of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Malaya and the Agriculture College in Serdang, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, has a rich history. The initial three founding faculties consisted of the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Forestry, and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science.
On May 21, 1931, UPM was founded as the School of Agriculture, situated in Serdang with a land area of 22 acres (9 hectares). Initially, it offered only two programs: a three-year diploma program and a one-year certificate course in agriculture. Subsequently, on June 23, 1947, the institution was elevated to the status of the College of Agriculture Malaya, a declaration made by the then Governor of Malayan Union, Sir Edward Gent.
