The Ministry of Education commenced the construction planning for the university in August 1983, signifying the initiation of this noteworthy undertaking. On 19 October 1983, the Cabinet provided its endorsement for the project in Kedah. Initially named "The Sixth University Project," the endeavor progressed steadily. After several months, on 15 February 1984, the temporary office of the Sixth University, officially designated as Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), was ceremoniously opened in Jitra.
In June 1984, after a span of four months since its official opening, the UUM office was shifted to the temporary Darul Aman Campus in Jitra. This relocation took place once the initial phase of the project had been completed. The academic year commenced in June 1984 as well. The Darul Aman Campus, occupying a 62-acre tract of land in Bandar Darulaman, was conveniently situated 18 km north of Alor Setar and 4.8 km away from Jitra.

Positioned 48 km north of Alor Setar and 10 km south of Bukit Kayu Hitam, it enjoys a convenient proximity to the Malaysia-Thailand border. Additionally, neighboring towns like Jitra and Changlun are situated in the vicinity of UUM.
The university has utilized 107 hectares of forest within its expansive land area to create various amenities accessible to the public. Consequently, the campus has transformed into an inclusive space that attracts both visitors and tourists. Notable facilities available include a designated picnic area, a deer farm, a nine-hole golf course, a go-kart circuit, a shooting and archery range, as well as an ostrich farm.
UUMKL Campus, situated in the heart of the city center along Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz in the Kampung Baru area and adjacent to Chow Kit, is the inaugural UUM study center that is fully owned and operated directly by UUM. This non-residential campus occupies a nine-storey building, serving as a prominent educational hub outside Sintok.
