Universiti Malaysia Terengganu originated from the Centre for Fisheries and Marine Science of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, situated in Mengabang Telipot, Kuala Terengganu. The journey of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu began as the Centre for Fisheries and Marine Science, an integral part of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia. This center served as a practical learning ground for students and lecturers enrolled in the Fisheries and Marine Science programs. In 1996, the center expanded its horizons and transformed into a branch campus, taking on the name Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Terengganu. However, it wasn't until 2007 that the university underwent a significant rebranding and emerged as Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.
Eventually, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang was transferred to Kuala Terengganu, and the Centre transformed into a branch campus, being renamed Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Terengganu (UPMT) in June 1996. The name of the faculty was also changed to the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology. Also formed were the Faculty of Science and Professional Literature and the Matriculation Centre.
