Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences (UPWr) is a public university in Poland that specializes in food, environmental and veterinary sciences. It was established in 1951 as an independent university, but its origins can be traced back to the 19th century when it was part of the Lviv Academy of Veterinary Medicine and the Polish Academy of Agriculture. UPWr has six faculties that offer over 40 degree programs at the bachelor, master, and doctoral level, covering various disciplines such as agriculture, horticulture, animal science, fisheries, biological sciences, biotechnology, civil engineering, geodesy, transport, environmental engineering, mining, energy, food and nutrition technology, social and economic geography, spatial management, veterinary science, and more. UPWr is one of the best specialist universities in Poland, ranking second among natural and agricultural universities and 25th among all universities in the country in the Perspektywy ranking 2020. It also ranks among the top 100 universities in the world in the fields of Food Science & Technology, Veterinary Science and Chemical Engineering in the Shanghai Ranking 2020. UPWr has a modern scientific and didactic infrastructure, including well-equipped laboratories, animal clinics, and eight off-campus experimental and research centres. It also has a library, a sports centre, a student dormitory, a canteen, a bookstore, and a botanical garden. UPWr has nearly 1.6 thousand employees, including 740 academic staff and 860 administrative and technical staff. It educates over 8 thousand students and almost 200 doctoral students, who can participate in various academic, cultural, artistic, and sports activities, as well as student mobility and exchange programs. UPWr is headed by the rector, prof. dr hab. inż. Jarosław Bosy, who is elected by the university senate for a four-year term. The rector is assisted by four vice-rectors, each responsible for a specific area of university management.
UPWr offers 28 degree programmes at six faculties: Faculty of Biology and Animal Science, Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Science, Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Geodesy, Faculty of Spatial Management and Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and Faculty of Life Sciences and Technology. The programmes are taught in Polish or English, and cover various disciplines such as agriculture, horticulture, animal science, fisheries, biological sciences, biotechnology, civil engineering, geodesy, transport, environmental engineering, mining, energy, food and nutrition technology, social and economic geography, spatial management, veterinary science, and more.
